Dr. Li-Ta Hsu received the 2022 Per Enge Early Achievement Award, presented at ION ITM/PTTI 2023 in Long Beach, California, in January 2023. The award is named in honor of the late Professor Per Enge of Stanford University, a pioneering figure in GPS and satellite navigation who made transformative contributions to the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) and the development of aviation navigation integrity. Professor Enge served as director of the Stanford GPS Research Laboratory and was widely regarded as one of the most influential leaders in the positioning, navigation, and timing community.
The Per Enge Early Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishment in the early stages of their career in the field of navigation. It is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed by the Institute of Navigation (ION) and reflects exceptional technical contributions, leadership, and potential for continued impact. Dr. Hsu is the 2022 ION Per Enge Early Achievement Award recipient, formally presented at the ION International Technical Meeting / Precise Time and Time Interval (ITM/PTTI) meeting, held 23–26 January 2023 at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach in Long Beach, California.
Dr. Hsu was recognized for his significant contributions to GNSS positioning in urban environments, including pioneering work on 3D mapping-aided GNSS, NLOS signal detection and mitigation, factor graph optimization for multi-sensor fusion, and the development of open-source datasets and tools that have advanced the field. As an Associate Professor in the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the founder and director of IPNL, Dr. Hsu has established a prolific research program addressing the fundamental challenges of achieving reliable and accurate positioning in dense urban canyons where conventional GNSS techniques are severely degraded.
